Why You Should Visit
Held at 13:00 on 4 January in front of the First Main Sanctuary, this New Year ritual originated at the imperial court. Two figures, one carrying a bag of small rice cakes and one holding a plum branch, call to each other as they walk across the courtyard before offering the cakes at the altar. Shrine maidens then perform the Shirabyoshi and Kumano dances handed down at Sumiyoshi Taisha, praying for happiness and good harvests. The ritual ends with lucky rice cakes thrown to the crowd.
