Why You Should Visit

On the 21st and 22nd of every month, 300–500 stalls fill the grounds of Shitennoji Temple in what is one of the largest antique markets in the Kansai region. The 21st is "Odaishi-san," the monthly memorial day of Kobo Daishi, and the 22nd is "Otaishi-san" for Prince Shotoku. Stalls run all day, selling antiques, old tools, vintage bric-a-brac, kimono and used clothing, alongside food vendors. Many items carry no price tag, so haggling and chatting with the sellers is half the fun. On both days the central precinct — normally a paid area — is opened free of charge, and you can climb to the top-floor gallery of the five-storied pagoda.

[What to bring] Cash — plenty of ¥1,000 notes and coins. A large bag and comfortable shoes make the rounds easier.

* A separate market, the Shitenkai Nomi-no-ichi, is held in the same precinct on the second Sunday of each month.

* The market may be cancelled in severe weather, and dates can shift around Obon and the New Year. Check the temple's monthly schedule page.
