Why You Should Visit

A traditional fire festival of Minoh's Kayano district, revived and carried on by the local community. At 19:00, a procession of torches and paper lanterns slowly follows the Senri River, the line of flames reflecting off the water. Meanwhile Kayano Square at Minoh Q's Mall hosts yosakoi naruko dancing, jazz dance and fire performances. Directly connected to Minoh-Kayano Station and free to watch, it's an easy summer evening out.

[Background]
- "Mandoro" is an old Obon-season folk rite of Hakunoshima in Minoh
- It is said to have travelled from Mt. Atago in Kyoto along the Saigoku Kaido road
- Once all ten Kayano villages held it at the same time: each hamlet took fire from its own Atago shrine and carried it down, and the torches lined up in a single row across the mountainside
- Today's festival is that rite, revived by residents themselves
