Venue & access: Kiyomizu-yaki Danchi pottery district, Yamashina, Kyoto From Yamashina Station (JR, subway, Keihan), take Keihan Bus route 29 to Kiyomizuyaki-danchi, then walk 5 minutes. There is no parking at the venue, so come by public transport rather than car.

Why You Should Visit

Kyoto's big pottery market in Yamashina, held since 1975 as the Kiyomizu-yaki no Sato Matsuri, returns for its 50th edition in 2026 under a new name: KYOPO – Kyoto Pottery Expo. It still fills the Kiyomizu-yaki Danchi ceramics district, now with 155 booths (120 pottery, 24 food and 11 local businesses), so you can buy straight from makers ranging from young potters to long-established kilns. Highlights include KYOPO CUP, where potters compete at the wheel; KYOPO INTERNATIONAL, with booths from two Taiwanese ceramics studios; and KYOPO PLAY, weekend hands-on activities for kids. Admission is free.

Programmes

KYOPO CUP: potters compete at the wheel — tallest piece, most cups thrown, and a final making a large platter from 8 kg of clay (open to pros and amateurs; ¥100,000 prize)
KYOPO INTERNATIONAL: special booths from Taiwanese ceramics studios chin chin pottery and Tu Xing studio
KYOPO PLAY (weekends only): a clay play area, painting your own chopstick rest, and electric-wheel try-outs

Is KYOPO the same event as the Kiyomizu-yaki no Sato Matsuri?

Yes. The festival that has run since 1975 took the name KYOPO from its 50th edition in 2026. It is held in the same Kiyomizu-yaki Danchi district.

Is there an admission fee?

No — admission is free, no reservation is needed, and you can come and go freely on all three days.

Is there parking?

There is no parking at the venue. During the festival, extra direct buses run from Kyoto Station (about 20 minutes) along with a free loop bus around Yamashina.

Is it held in the rain?

Yes, it goes ahead in the rain. It is cancelled in severe weather such as a typhoon, so check the official site or social accounts on the morning of your visit.

What time does it end on the final day?

The first two days run until 17:00, but the final day, 18 October, closes at 16:00. Popular kilns thin out as stock sells, so come earlier if you want a choice.
