Why You Should Visit

Kaijinja Shrine, just south of Tarumi Station, holds its autumn festival every October 10–12. The 10th is the eve, the 11th the main rite, when futon-daiko drum floats kept by four local districts — Nishi-Tarumi, Higashi-Tarumi, Higashi-Takamaru and Shioya — parade, face off and enter the shrine in the evening. On the 12th the portable shrine is carried aboard a boat and, escorted by dozens of vessels, sails the coast from Komagabayashi to Maiko. Food stalls line the grounds and viewing is free.

Kaijinja schedule
  • 10/10 Eve: each district's futon-daiko float parades its neighbourhood (no entry into Kaijinja this day)
  • 10/11 Main rite: the four districts' floats (Nishi-Tarumi, Higashi-Tarumi, Higashi-Takamaru, Shioya) face off at Tarumi Fishing Port and enter Kaijinja in the evening
  • 10/12 Boat procession: the mikoshi boards a ceremonial boat at Tarumi Fishing Port. 2026 is Shioya's once-every-five-years turn, so it lands at Shioya Fishing Port, is carried through Shioya, then sails back to Tarumi
  • The formal shrine rites themselves are not open to the public

  • Over the same three days, Shioya Wakamiya, Mizugaoka Hachiman, Maiko Roku and Okuhata Otoshi shrines hold their own lion-dance and futon-daiko festivals; each has its own schedule

When is the 2026 festival?
October 10 (Sat) to 12 (Mon, holiday), 2026. The futon-daiko floats enter the shrine on the evening of the 11th, and the boat procession is on the 12th.
Are there food stalls?
Yes, stalls line the grounds all three days, opening from late morning and closing at 22:00.
Where can I watch the boat procession?
The boat's departure (around 10:00) and return (around 14:00) can be watched from the Tarumi Fishing Port quay. In 2026 the viewing area may be smaller than usual because of fishing boats in port.
Should I drive?
There is no visitor parking (cars or bikes) during the festival and roads close for the float parade, so take the train — it's about a minute's walk from Tarumi Station.
