Why You Should Visit

Jonangu Shrine in Fushimi, Kyoto holds this autumn procession festival, a rite that dates back to the late Heian period. Just after noon three portable shrines leave the grounds and are carried through the parish neighbourhoods, and at dusk they return to the shrine among lanterns and torches. It has long been known by the nickname "Mochi Matsuri". Watching is free, and the shrine is within walking distance of Takeda Station, so it fits easily into a half-day around southern Kyoto.
