Venue & access: Maruyama Park Music Hall (inside Maruyama Park), Kyoto About 10 min on foot from Keihan Gion-Shijo Station. By car, use the Kyoto City Maruyama Parking under Maruyama Park (134 cars, open 24 hours, ¥300 per 30 min).

Why You Should Visit

A day of music and market stalls at Maruyama Park Music Hall on 21 September, the International Day of Peace. Heiwa Matsuri, which frames kimono as 'the dress of peace', ran peace walks in Arashiyama in 2024 and 2025; the 2026 Kyoto edition moves to this open-air stage with talks, singers, crystal bowls and Japanese dance, plus stalls for henna art, crystals, all-you-can-bag vegetables and fried chicken. A free kids' corner offers yo-yo fishing and bouncy-ball scooping. Free entry, no booking. You need not wear kimono; a folding fan or hair ornament counts, and the venue sits a short walk from Gion.

What to wear:

Bringing something 'wa' helps you blend in: kimono, or just a folding fan, hair ornament, green tea or Japanese sweets

Past Kyoto editions:

2024 and 2025 were peace walks in Arashiyama on 21 September (meeting at Randen Arashiyama Station, visiting Horin-ji, Arashiyama Park, the bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji). From 2026 the format is a stage and market at Maruyama Park Music Hall

Is it free? Do I need to book?

Admission is free and no booking is needed. Drop in any time between 11:00 and 15:00.

Do I have to wear kimono?

There is no dress code. The organisers suggest kimono, or simply a small Japanese touch such as a fan or hair ornament, or carrying green tea and wagashi. Everyday clothes are fine.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. There is a kids' corner with yo-yo fishing and super-ball scooping, free for the first 200. The open-air venue makes it easy to come and go.

What happens if it rains?

As it is an outdoor venue, the programme may change with the weather. Same-day decisions are posted on the organiser's Instagram.
