Why You Should Visit

A New Year's Eve tradition at Yasaka Shrine that runs from the night of December 31 into the early hours of January 1. After the Joya-sai rite at 7:00 pm, the sacred okera fire is transferred to three okera lanterns in the shrine grounds, and visitors light a rope fuse from it to carry home. In Kyoto custom, this flame is used to light the household altar lamp and cook the New Year ozoni soup, as a prayer for good health in the coming year. The Okera-sai rite follows at 5:00 am on New Year's Day. A distinctly Kyoto way to see in the New Year.
