Why You Should Visit
Manninko is the grand festival of Enpuku-ji, known as Daruma-do, a Rinzai Zen training temple in the hills of Yawata, south of Kyoto. It is held every year on April 20 and October 20. On these days the usually closed temple grounds open to visitors, and the hidden seated wooden statue of Bodhidharma (Daruma), an Important Cultural Property said to be the oldest of its kind in Japan, is put on special view. The admission ticket includes a single-wish Daruma prayer and a boxed meal, and worshippers come from early morning to pray for good fortune and protection from misfortune. A rare chance to step inside a working Zen temple.
NOTE
On the day
- Special unveiling of the hidden seated wooden statue of Bodhidharma, an Important Cultural Property said to be the oldest in Japan
- Single-wish Daruma prayer (included in the ticket)
- Calligraphy and a Dharma talk by Mori Seihan, chief abbot of Kiyomizu-dera (planned)
