Why You Should Visit

For one day only, on the national holiday of Tuesday, November 3, Daimaru Kobe's basement food floor gathers babka, the twisted sweet bread from Eastern Europe. Rich dough made with butter and eggs is rolled around fillings such as chocolate, twisted and baked, so every slice shows layered swirls. Five bakeries and chocolatiers, from Nada and Higashinada wards to Nishinomiya, each bring their own take, from pistachio to kumquat and chestnut to hojicha, so you can compare a few and pick a favourite. A good detour for bread lovers shopping around Motomachi and Sannomiya on the holiday.
