átoa : Things to See & Do
Located on floors 2–4 of Kobe Port Museum, átoa is a theatrical aquarium that opened in October 2021. Built on the concept of 'Sparkle of Life,' it merges stage design and digital art with marine life displays, immediately drawing widespread attention for fundamentally reimagining what an aquarium can be. The interior is divided into eight zones. Beginning at FOYER (the Starting Cave), visitors pass through MIYABI — where Japanese aesthetics and the luminance of koi carp coexist — and PLANETS (Cosmic Sea), before arriving at the climax zone, AQUA TERRA. The spherical tank here, three meters in diameter, is the undisputed highlight: optical fibers, laser beams, and drifting marine creatures combine to create a scene that feels like gazing at a planet from deep space. átoa's defining characteristic is the equal standing given to living creatures and art. Around 100 species and 3,000 organisms share the space with 50 artworks. Projection mapping and acoustic design are of a caliber rarely found in conventional aquariums, making átoa a destination in itself for photographers and videographers. Photo opportunities are woven throughout the building, with the kind of deliberate visual staging that makes every corner feel composed for a shot. The rooftop SKY SHORE opens to sweeping views of Kobe Port and the cityscape; on clear days you can make out the Rokko Mountains on the horizon. Since the interior provides full enjoyment regardless of weather, átoa has established itself as a must-visit regardless of the forecast — for couples, families with young children, and solo travelers seeking immersive photography experiences alike.
