Why You Should Visit

A nightly illumination at Amanohashidate, one of Japan's three great views, running from summer into autumn. Some 600 metres of beach on the Monju side and the pine grove are lit every evening, with lighting design by Shiho Nagamachi. On four Saturdays from 18 July to 8 August the Machi-Akari programme adds paper-umbrella lights at Chionji's sanmon gate and the station plaza, with a five-minute burst of fireworks over Miyazu Bay the same night. On 1 August they fire in sequence from three points — Miyazu, Monju and Fuchu — two minutes apart.

FAQ

When is the best night to go?
The beach illumination runs every night to 23 September. To catch the umbrella lights and fireworks as well, come on a Saturday — 8 August is the last one. The fireworks start at 20:30 and last about five minutes.
Where can I see the fireworks?
All of the dates are visible from the Amanohashidate beach. On 1 August they fire from three points two minutes apart, so a spot with a view across the bay lets you follow them in turn.
