Why You Should Visit

In Kibune, a narrow valley at the foot of Mount Kurama in northern Kyoto, the main approach to Kifune Shrine is lit up at night during the autumn foliage season. The stone steps lined with vermilion lanterns and the maples arching over them glow against the dark, quite different from the daytime view. Entry is free. Kibune sits higher and cooler than central Kyoto, and you can see its mountain foliage from sunset until 20:30 — a good choice if you want an evening autumn-leaf outing away from the city crowds.
