Why You Should Visit
Tsutenkaku, rebuilt and reopened on October 28, 1956, turns 70 this year. To mark koki—the traditional 70th birthday, whose celebratory color is purple—the whole tower glows purple for 16 nights from October 28 to November 12, from sunset until 23:00. On opening night (Oct 28) the lights come on in three stages starting at 18:00. From Oct 28 to 30, holders of a NANKAI Group commuter pass get into the observation deck free, and the tower also starts handing out a 70th-anniversary magnet to deck visitors and selling limited-edition goods. A good excuse for an evening walk around Shinsekai, or a photo of the tower in a color it rarely wears.
