Why You Should Visit
In Kyoto, ahead of Obon, people visit Rokudo Chinnoji to welcome their ancestors' spirits — a custom called Rokudo Mairi. You buy a branch of koyamaki, have the deceased's posthumous name written on a wooden tablet, strike the welcoming bell and make a water offering. The bell is said to carry all the way to the land of the dead, calling the departed back to this world. The temple grounds are known as Rokudo-no-tsuji, the crossing believed to mark the boundary between this world and the next.
