Why You Should Visit

Suimeikai is the autumn dance recital by the geiko and maiko of Pontocho, one of Kyoto's geisha districts. It runs for six days from 15 October at the Pontocho Kaburenjo Theatre by the Kamo River, with one show a day at 15:30. The 111th edition in 2026 features three pieces: the tokiwazu "Matsu no Hagoromo", the kiyomoto "Yasuna" and the nagauta "Hanakoi Pontocho Adekurabe" in nine scenes, all danced by the district's geiko and maiko. Separate from the spring Kamogawa Odori, it centres on classical dance and suits anyone wanting a closer look at geisha performance.
