Why You Should Visit

A festival of urushi lacquer held in Kyoto around 13 November, Japan's Urushi Day. Launched in 2025, this is its second edition. The main venue is Und., the base of Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi, a lacquer supplier founded in 1909. From 1 to 14 November there are talks, workshops, the Urushi School sessions, and a visit to the memorial service at Horinji Temple in Arashiyama, closing with the main festival day at Und. on 14 November. It is designed for people who have never handled lacquer as well as those who work with it, and suits anyone curious about Japanese crafts.

FAQ

Can I join if I have never worked with lacquer?

Yes. The festival is meant to introduce lacquer to people who have never encountered it. Check the official announcements for the conditions of each workshop or program.

Which day should I go?

The main festival day is the final day, Saturday 14 November, at Und. The day before, 13 November, is Urushi Day, with a visit to the memorial service at Horinji Temple in Arashiyama.

Is there a fee or do I need to book?

Fees and booking for 2026 will be announced from 1 October on the official website and Instagram. Admission was free in 2025.
