Why You Should Visit

The autumn grand festival of Ogo Hachiman Shrine in Ogo-cho, Kita Ward, is usually held on the first Sunday of October. Its centrepiece, the Otabi Shinji procession, is a designated intangible folk cultural property of Kobe and is said to have begun about 200 years ago as a prayer for good harvests. A futon-daiko drum float and a large portable shrine lead a procession out to the otabisho resting place, passing between rice fields ready for harvest. Back in the shrine grounds the mikoshi are jostled together, and four young shrine dancers perform a sacred dance. A chance to see a satoyama village festival up close.
