Why You Should Visit

Once a year, Bison — a village that has grown in Umemoto-cho, Hyogo Ward, by taking over derelict empty houses one at a time — opens up entirely for a one-day celebration. The hamlet mixes studios, homes, galleries, a shared tea room, an artist residency and a coworking space, and artists from around the world live here as villagers. There are guided Bison tours on the day and stallholders from all over Japan. Entry is free and it goes ahead rain or shine — a good pick if you'd like to walk through a neighbourhood being rebuilt by hand.
