Why You Should Visit

An autumn sake and food fair in the grounds of Nishinomiya Shrine, home of Japan's most famous Ebisu. For its 30th edition, eight local breweries of the Nishinomiya-go district, including Hakushika, Hakutaka, Nihonsakari and Ozeki, pour their sake, while about 30 local restaurants and food trucks serve dishes to match. Tastings cost roughly 100–600 yen each, paid in cash, with no ticket to buy in advance. On Saturday at noon, the first 800 visitors with a 500-yen commemorative masu cup join a mass toast and barrel opening in front of the main hall, followed by a parade recreating the Edo-period new-sake shipping race. A free shuttle bus runs about every 20 minutes to five brewery venues such as the Sake Museum and Hakutaka Rokusuien.

FAQ

Do I need to buy tasting tickets in advance?

No. There is no ticket system. Admission is free, and you pay in cash at each booth for tastings and food.

Can I drive there?

No. The organizers ask visitors not to come by car, motorbike or bicycle. The shrine is about 5 minutes on foot from Hanshin Nishinomiya Station, and a free shuttle bus serves the brewery venues.

Is there anything for non-drinkers and children?

Yes. The 30 or so food booths, the local specialties market and the kagura dance and parade are open to everyone. Drinking is limited to those aged 20 and over.
