Why You Should Visit

Jizo-bon at Nishidaiji, a Toji Shingon temple two minutes' walk from Shin-Nagata Station, held every year on the evening of August 23. Rows of paper lanterns marked "Jizoson" fill the grounds, and once they are lit at dusk the place looks nothing like it does by day. Children who have prayed receive toys and sweets, and food stalls draw a crowd into the evening. Around 1,300 people came in 2024 — an old-town Kobe ritual marking the end of summer.

FAQ

What happens if it rains?
It is held rain or shine. For severe weather, check with the temple (078-621-2845).
Do children receive sweets and toys?
Toys and sweets are handed to children who have prayed. Supplies are limited, so coming earlier is safer.
Is there parking?
There is worshipper parking for 9 cars east of the temple and 4 south of it. With so few spaces and a busy evening, the train is the safer bet — the temple is a two-minute walk from Shin-Nagata Station.
