Why You Should Visit

A bon-odori held in the grounds of Myohoji, a Suma temple said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki. It runs together with Jizo-bon, the summer rite for children's healthy growth: prayers at the Jizo statues begin at 15:00, and the main hall offers blessings and hands out sweets. Festival games such as superball scooping, food trucks, a yukata dressing and photo session and a keyring-making workshop fill the grounds. The dancing starts around 17:30, as dusk settles over the hillside temple. Organized by a local committee, it's an easy evening to bring children to.
