Why You Should Visit

One of Japan's three great lantern-floating rites, held since the Edo period. On the night of 16 August the spirit boats are set alight and red-and-white lanterns drift out across Miyazu Bay. From 19:50 about 2,000 shells go up, so the lights on the water and the fireworks overhead come together. A bon-odori follows until 21:30, and the eve of the 15th brings a citizens' dance at Shimazaki Park.
