Free to watch. Lantern participation (advance application required): Mitsunari launch lantern ¥2,500 each, hand-held lantern ¥1,500 each No booking is needed to watch. To take part with a lantern, apply in advance via the application form; it closes once all lanterns are taken.
Venue & access
Ohara Kannonji Temple (Maibara, Shiga) From JR Omi-Nagaoka or JR Nagahama Station, take a Kokoku Bus to "Kannonji" and walk about 5 minutes. By car, about 13 minutes from Nagahama IC on the Hokuriku Expressway (parking for about 70 cars).

Why You Should Visit

An autumn-evening lantern festival at Ohara Kannonji in Maibara, the temple said to be where Ishida Mitsunari first met Toyotomi Hideyoshi. From around 18:00, lanterns carrying participants' wishes are launched from the temple grounds into the night sky. Watching is free; to launch a lantern yourself you need to apply in advance. During the day the book café "Kannonji Mitsunari-an" is open with books and panel displays about Mitsunari plus a café menu. A good fit for anyone who wants Sengoku history and lantern light at one of Mitsunari's key sites.

Can I just come to watch?
Yes. Watching is free and needs no booking. Only those launching a lantern need to apply in advance.
Can I sign up for a lantern on the day?
The stated deadline is 31 October (the day itself), but applications close as soon as the 80 Mitsunari lanterns and 50 hand-held lanterns run out. Up to 4 of each type per application.
