Why You Should Visit

Tucked into the hills of Furuhashi in Kinomoto, Nagahama, Keisoku-ji and Shakudo-ji are among the best-known autumn-foliage spots in northern Shiga. During the season, a local committee from the Furuhashi and Ishimichi districts opens temporary car parks and collects a foliage-walk contribution from November 14 to December 3, 8:30–16:00. You can walk between the two mountain-village temples among the maples. Getting there from the station takes a bus plus a walk, so it suits visitors who can set aside a relaxed half day for autumn in the Kohoku region.
