Why You Should Visit

Ohama Goten is the lakeside villa garden built around 1810 by Ii Naonaka, the 11th lord of the Hikone Domain, on the shore of Lake Biwa. Now a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, it is opened to the public by Hikone City only twice a year, in spring and autumn. The autumn opening runs for nine days, from 21 to 29 November. Entry is free and no booking is needed, though only the garden is open and the buildings stay closed. Four designs of goteiin (garden seal cards, 300 yen each) are sold during the opening, and a kitchen car serving crepes and more is planned for the first day, 21 November. A good add-on for visitors exploring Hikone Castle and the old castle town.
