Why You Should Visit

Ishiyamadera in Otsu lights up more than 1,000 maple trees in its grounds for Atarayo Momiji, running from 13 to 29 November. The illumination also covers the National Treasure main hall, said to be the oldest wooden building in Shiga, and the Tahoto, Japan's oldest pagoda of its type. You can see maples reflected in the pond and visit the Kofuen garden, which opens only at night. A full loop of the grounds takes about an hour, and guided night tours run on weekends and holidays by reservation. A good pick if you want an evening autumn-leaves visit within easy train reach of Kyoto.
