cost: Driveway toll applies: a return trip between the Tanotani-toge gate and Yumemigaoka is ¥860 for cars and ¥580 for motorcycles.
Venue & access: Yumemigaoka, Hieizan Driveway (Otsu) From Meishin Expressway Kyoto-Higashi IC, take the Nishi-Otsu Bypass to Omi-Jingu ramp, then the Yamanaka-goe road to the Tanotani-toge gate. From central Kyoto, take Yamanaka-goe from the Kitashirakawa-Betto-cho junction to the same gate. Yumemigaoka is about 2 km past the gate.

Why You Should Visit

Halfway up the Hieizan Driveway, about 2 km past the Tanotani-toge gate, the Yumemigaoka lookout lights up its autumn maples after dark. The observation deck looks down over Otsu and Lake Biwa, so you get the illuminated leaves and the lakeside night view from the same spot. The lights are on from sunset to 21:00, and you can drive straight up and walk over from the car park. A good evening drive from Kyoto or Otsu.
