Why You Should Visit

Manganji, a mountain temple in Kawanishi, lights up the autumn leaves in its grounds for its November Kanpue (maple-viewing) gathering, running November 10–30. On the 14th, the Mangan-to ceremony lights wish-bearing talismans in a large stone lantern, and on the 21st the Senbon Rosoku event fills the grounds with a thousand candles, followed in the evening by ryuteki and nokan flute music in the main hall's corridor. Daytime plans include Japanese instrument performances, a haiku gathering, yoga, workshops and food trucks, and the temple's Kintoki Chaya serves house-made Manganji soba. A good pick if you want to see the foliage by day and by candlelight on the same visit.
