Why You Should Visit
Tajima Ankoku Zenji, a small Zen temple in the hills of Tanto-cho, Toyooka, opens its back garden to the public when the dodan-tsutsuji (Enkianthus) behind the main hall turns brilliant red. Viewed from inside the tatami room, the pillars and veranda frame the hillside of color like a painting. The leaves usually peak in mid-November. The garden is open on weekdays only during the period, not on weekends. It pairs well with a drive to the castle town of Izushi for a full-day trip in northern Hyogo.
NOTE
Open days
- Weekdays only during the period (closed on weekends)
- No evening illumination
Parking
- Several lots within a 5-minute walk of the temple
