Venue & access: Jonangu Shrine, Kaguraden outdoor stage About a 15-minute walk (3 minutes by taxi) from Takeda Station on the Karasuma subway line or the Kintetsu Kyoto line, or city bus route 19 to the "Jonangu" stop. By car, use the shrine's free parking (200 cars during event periods).

Why You Should Visit

Jonangu Shrine in Fushimi, Kyoto performs this shrine-maiden kagura dance on September 1 and 9 plus weekends and holidays. It follows a Heian-period custom of praying for health and youth with chrysanthemums at the Chrysanthemum Festival on September 9. A miko with a chrysanthemum in her headdress dances with a gold-and-silver fan, then performs the kagura with sacred bells. Afterwards the "Kiku no Hanamori" amulet is offered, and each recipient is purified individually with the bells. Watching is free and open to all.

Origin

In the Heian period, silk floss was laid over chrysanthemums on September 9 and pressed to the face the next morning, still damp with dew, as a prayer for youth and health

Watching is free and open to all. Only the Kiku no Hanamori amulet costs 1,000 yen.

Is it performed every day?

It is performed on September 1 and 9 plus weekends and holidays. In 2026 that means the 1st, 5th, 6th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 26th and 27th, twice each day at 10:00 and 15:00.

Do I need a reservation?

No reservation is needed. Just come to the front of the Kaguraden stage at the scheduled time.
