Kamotsuba Shrine Autumn Festival: Susuki Lanterns 2026

Why You Should Visit

The annual autumn festival of Kamotsuba Shrine in Gose, Nara. On the eve, susuki lanterns, tall poles hung with tiers of paper lanterns, are carried from Katsuragi Park along the streets near Gose Station to the shrine, swaying as they enter the grounds. The Nara tourism site describes about 30 of them. The next day, a large mikoshi portable shrine travels through town and returns to the shrine in the early afternoon. A good pick for anyone who wants to see a lantern procession at night or soak up a local Nara festival.

TICKETS / REGISTRATION: No sign-up is needed to watch. The shrine is recruiting volunteers to carry the main-day mikoshi; register by adding the bearer sign-up LINE account (QR code on the shrine website). Bearers gather at the shrine at 8:00 on the day.

Is it free to watch?

Yes, it is free and no reservation is needed.

Can I go by car?

The shrine car park is closed on festival days. Nearby coin parking or walking from Gose Station are the options.

Is kamo-jiru (duck soup) served?

The shrine has announced there will be no free kamo-jiru serving in 2026.

What happens if it rains?

The eve lantern procession may be cancelled without notice depending on the weather that afternoon. The shrine also notes that the main-day mikoshi procession may change its time or route, or be cancelled, depending on the weather.
