Why You Should Visit

A three-day summer festival at Kaijinja, the guardian shrine of Kobe's Tarumi ward. At its heart is the chinowa ritual: you pass through a large ring woven from kaya grass set before the main hall to wash off the first half of the year's misfortune and pray for good health. Lanterns made by local children are hung before the hall and lit after dark, and food stalls line the approach until 9pm each night. The shrine is a short walk from Tarumi Station.
