Venue & access: Kaminomido Hall, Horyuji Temple From JR Horyuji Station, take a Nara Kotsu bus to Horyuji Monzen; the temple is right there. By car, use the town parking lot (¥500 for regular cars).

Why You Should Visit

At Horyuji in Ikaruga, Kaminomido Hall, which stands north of the Western Precinct, opens its doors for just three days each year, November 1 to 3. The hall itself is a Kamakura-period Important Cultural Property, and inside sits a National Treasure Shakyamuni Triad (Shakyamuni flanked by Monju and Fugen bodhisattvas) carved in the Heian period. Most of the year you can only see the building from outside, so this is the one chance annually to view the statues up close. It slots easily into a visit to the Golden Hall and Five-Story Pagoda.

No. The Shakyamuni Triad inside can only be viewed during the special opening, held every year from November 1 to 3.
