Why You Should Visit

A special opening of Shishikaku, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property at Hozanji, the temple locals call "Ikoma no Shoten-san." Completed in 1884, Shishikaku is a Western-style guest hall built by master carpenter Yoshimura Matsutaro. It is normally closed, and opens only a few times a year for about three days each. Hozanji was founded in 1678 by the monk Tankai, and its main hall, Shoten hall and two-storied pagoda sit beneath Hannya-kutsu, a huge rock cliff. Ride the Ikoma Cable Car up the mountain and combine the visit with a walk around the temple grounds.
