Why You Should Visit

At Horyuji in Ikaruga, the shrine housing the Guze Kannon, a hidden Buddha enshrined in Yumedono Hall in the Eastern Precinct, is opened for a limited period in autumn. The statue is normally kept behind closed doors and can only be seen during the special spring and autumn openings. In autumn 2026 the viewing runs for about a month, from October 22 to November 22. You can walk from the Golden Hall and Five-Story Pagoda in the Western Precinct over to the Eastern Precinct, so it fits easily into a half-day visit covering the whole temple. A good pick for anyone interested in Buddhist sculpture and ancient architecture, or visiting Nara in autumn.
