Why You Should Visit

Shusei is an autumn evening of Noh and Buddhist chanting at Hasedera, the head temple in Sakurai, Nara, subtitled "The World of Kiku-Jido and the Kannon Sutra." Hasedera's monks perform shomyo, sutras sung as Buddhist vocal music, followed by the Noh play Kiku-Jido with shite actor Bunzo Otsuki and kotsuzumi drummer Genjiro Okura. The play tells of a boy who gains eternal youth through the Kannon Sutra and dances as he offers chrysanthemum wine, a fitting piece for a temple devoted to Kannon. The calligraphy club of local Sakurai High School opens the program. Seating comes in three types: floor cushions, floor chairs and regular chairs.
