Why You Should Visit

An autumn festival on the theme of stars and ancient Japan, held around the Kitora Tumulus in Asuka, Nara. The star chart painted inside Kitora is said to be the oldest surviving full-scale Chinese-style star map in the world. In 2026, marking the World Heritage listing of the Asuka-Fujiwara capital sites and the 10th anniversary of the Shijin no Yakata mural center, each day has a different lineup: a re-enacted procession of Empress Saimei in ancient costume, a historical play, ancient-pattern dyeing workshops, folk performing arts and a lion-dance parade. The Kitora Star Market runs 10:00–15:00 on both days. A good stop for anyone into burial mounds and star lore, or families spending a day in Asuka.
