Why You Should Visit

HANARART is an art festival that fills old machiya townhouses and traditional homes in Nara's historic districts with contemporary art. The 16th edition in 2026 moves through five areas between October and November. In Imai-cho, a preserved Edo-period merchant town, venues include the former Yonetani residence, an Important Cultural Property, while in Katsuragi Shinzaike ten artists show work inside the sake storehouse and residence of the former Nakagawa brewery. Entry is basically free, so it is an easy way to step inside historic houses you normally can't enter while strolling Nara's old streets.
