Why You Should Visit

A guided-but-free-roaming food walk through Merca Road Ujikawa, an old-fashioned market and shopping street north of JR Kobe Station that still feels like Showa-era Japan. Participants meet at Honganji Kobe Betsuin, the striking "Modern Temple" in Hanakuma, for a look inside, then spend about 90 minutes exploring the street with a sightseeing map, nibbling at participating shops such as a kamaboko fish-cake maker and a tearoom. The afternoon ends back at the temple with a tea gathering with food and live singing, followed by a shamisen performance by a school headmaster. Joining is free; you pay for what you eat at each shop.
