Venue & access: Gokonomiya Shrine (Fushimi-ku, Kyoto) Right by Momoyama-Goryomae Station (Kintetsu Kyoto Line), or about 5 minutes on foot from Keihan Fushimi-Momoyama Station. The shrine car park is closed Oct 2–12 for the stalls; a temporary bicycle park is set up near the north gate. Come on foot or by public transport.

Why You Should Visit

The autumn grand festival of Gokonomiya, the guardian shrine of Fushimi, also known as the Fushimi Matsuri and the biggest festival in southern Kyoto. On the first and eighth evenings, neighbourhood groups carry elaborately decorated hanagasa (flower umbrellas) into the shrine grounds in the Hanagasa procession and parade; on the final day mikoshi tour the parish from morning to night. Well over a hundred food stalls line the grounds throughout, and the Senhime mikoshi is on display. Nine days of local energy, from the chants of the night processions to the lion and samurai parades.

Three mikoshi are displayed east of the worship hall throughout, and the Senhime mikoshi (about 2,300 kg) can be viewed
