Why You Should Visit

An adults-only variety night at Kirakukan, Shinkaichi's rakugo theater, hosted by Dormilon, a cafe bar in nearby Fukuhara-cho. Rakugo storyteller Katsura Otome and "pink rakugo" performer Katsura Ponpoko share the stage with burlesque artists MECAV and MIDORI AKI and Anesama Kings, a musical manzai duo who perform in geisha costume with ko-uta and dodoitsu songs; Iritani Kazume plays the shamisen. It puts burlesque and traditional yose acts into one evening at a classic storytelling hall. Seats come in three tiers, with a presale at the Dormilon shop and general sales through Ticket Pia and the Kirakukan box office.

  • Katsura OtomeRakugo

    Entered Yoshimoto's NSC comedy school in 2009 and worked in a girls' unit and as a comedian before becoming an apprentice of Katsura Ayame III in March 2017. Studies both classical and new rakugo and also opens shows at Tenma Tenjin Hanjotei and Kirakukan.

  • Katsura PonpokoPink rakugo

    Began rakugo in 2006. Besides "pink rakugo" told from a woman's point of view, she performs BL stories modeled on real rakugo performers and risqué pieces in the classical style, calling herself a "shimogata" rather than kamigata storyteller.

  • MECAVBurlesque

    Started out as a pole dancer and now performs in Japan and abroad as both pole dancer and burlesque artist. Won the SLAVIC BURLESQUE FESTIVAL 2022 in Poland and hosts VARIETEASE KYOTO, a cabaret-style night in Kyoto.

  • MIDORI AKIBurlesque

    An Osaka-based pole and burlesque dancer who performs across Japan, known for an aesthetic, decadent style.

  • Anesama KingsMusical manzai

    A musical manzai duo in geisha costume formed in 1999 by rakugo performers Katsura Ayame and Hayashiya Senjaku. They mix ko-uta, dodoitsu and ahodarakyo chants with topical jokes.

  • 入谷和女Shamisen

    Studied under Kobayashi Masako from 1981 and plays shamisen mainly at Tenma Tenjin Hanjotei and Kirakukan.
