Why You Should Visit

About 500 handmade paper lanterns softly light the old Atago Kaido street in Saga-Toriimoto, Kyoto, for this year's 31st edition themed "Evolution." Lanterns made by locals, from children to art students, line the road from Seiryoji Temple to the first torii of Atago Shrine. Day one brings a lighting ceremony, Narutaki taiko drumming and Bon dancing; day two adds a kids' festival with shooting games and goldfish-scoop-style stalls. A good pick for a quiet evening walk through old Saga's lantern-lit streets.
