Why You Should Visit
Anyo-in, a sub-temple of the ancient Taisan-ji in Kobe's Nishi Ward, opens its garden, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, for just seven days in autumn. The dry landscape garden, said to date from the Azuchi-Momoyama period, is built around bold stone arrangements including a Horai stone and crane and turtle groupings, and you view it from a mid-Edo thatched-roof building. Taisan-ji's main hall is the only National Treasure building in Kobe, and the Niomon gate and three-storied pagoda are on the same grounds. Admission is ¥300 with no booking needed. A good pick if you want to see a rarely opened stone garden at a quiet hillside temple during the autumn colour season.
