Why You Should Visit

An autumn fire festival in which a period-costume procession walks by the light of Japanese candles from Kumano Hongu Taisha to Oyunohara, the shrine's original site. 2026 marks the 25th edition. Named the "festival of guidance" after the legend of the three-legged crow Yatagarasu guiding Emperor Jimmu through the Kumano mountains, it moves from solemn Shinto rites to powerful Okukumano taiko drumming and ends with the Yata fireworks rising over the mountain valley. A good choice if you want to spend a whole evening at Kumano Hongu, from dusk to fireworks.
