"Wait, where are they launching from...?"
On the first night I had my camera ready but no idea where the launch site was. Then I spotted the barge right in front of me and realised: Minato HANABI is much closer than you'd imagine.
That was the start of five nights of chasing fireworks. Here are the viewing spots I found across more than a hundred photos, updated with everything that has changed for 2026.
📅 What's happening in 2026
- Dates: Monday 19 - Friday 23 October 2026, five nights
- Fireworks: 18:30-18:50 (20 minutes)
- Full programme: 16:30-19:30 (KOBE Machinaka Performance 16:30-17:00, Meriken Music Nights! 18:50-19:30)
- Launch site: a barge moored offshore of Meriken Park
- Viewing areas: Meriken Park (free) and Shinko Pier No.1 (reserved seats, 2,200 yen)
- Food stalls: none
- Note: roads around the venue are closed to all vehicles including taxis and tour buses, and car parks inside the restricted zone cannot be entered or exited
Three things changed since 2025: the display grew from 15 to 20 minutes, performances and live music now bracket the fireworks so the site runs 16:30-19:30, and the atoa rooftop went from a free perk for pass holders to a paid ticket.

💺 Decide whether to pay before you decide where to stand
In 2026 there are three ways to watch. Settle this first and the rest falls into place.
| Option | Price | Seating | Music | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meriken Park (free) | Free | ❌ | ⭕️ | Unlimited |
| Shinko Pier No.1 (reserved) | 2,200 yen | ⭕️ | ⭕️ | Until sold out |
| atoa 4F SKYSHORE | 4,100 yen / 7,600 yen with meal | ⭕️ | ⭕️ | 30 people a day |
| Around MOSAIC / TOTTEI PARK | Free | △ | ❌ | Unlimited |
Reserved seats on Shinko Pier No.1 (2,200 yen)
All seats are assigned and gates open at 17:00 each day. Tickets are sold through Lawson Ticket (L-code 51019) and Loppi terminals inside Lawson and Ministop stores.
- Children aged 3 and under are free, seated on a guardian's lap
- All seats non-smoking, no bins on site, take your rubbish home
- No tripods, monopods, pets or umbrellas (bring a rain poncho instead)
- Refunds are given if the event is cancelled for severe weather
- A stroller parking area is provided
Handling fees are added on top: 165 yen per paper ticket, 110 yen per e-ticket.
atoa 4F SKYSHORE (from 4,100 yen)
A private rooftop terrace on the fourth floor of AQUARIUM x ART atoa. Thirty people per day, check-in 18:00-18:30.
- Viewing only: 4,100 yen
- With a 3,500 yen meal ticket: 7,600 yen
- Annual passport and Kao PASS holders: 1,000 yen, or 4,000 yen with the meal ticket
- Elementary school children and younger cannot enter; no tripods or selfie sticks
In 2025 this was a free perk for pass holders, capped at 60 people. For 2026 anyone can buy in, but the cap has been halved to 30. If you already hold an annual passport, 1,000 yen is a bargain.
📖 Five nights of notes (from 2025)
What follows is my log from five consecutive nights in 2025. Sightlines and crowd levels should be much the same in 2026, so use it to pick your spot.
Night 1: in front of MOSAIC - excitement and a misfire
"Where are they launching from...?"
I turned up unprepared. Camera settings and framing were pure guesswork. But the barge sitting right in front of me told me something: this is much closer than I expected. There had to be a better spot.
Night 2: TOTTEI PARK - a second go, beer in hand
Having learned my lesson, I scouted properly. The buzz of the waterfront beer event pulled me to TOTTEI PARK. Fireworks from the lawn with a craft beer is casual, and it's hard to beat. 🍺
Night 3: atoa rooftop - the music changes everything
I arrived at 16:45 to find about five people waiting. Then at 18:30, fireworks synced to music gave me chills. A completely different experience.🎵
Night 4: behind the MOSAIC Ferris wheel - finding the frame
The turning wheel against the fireworks. The moment I saw it through the viewfinder I knew. A vertical composition with the wheel in the foreground came out better than I'd hoped. 📷
Night 5: TOTTEI PARK - closing out with another beer
For the last night, back here. I wanted to end the run relaxed: beer in hand, sitting on the grass, talking with friends. This is how Kobe watches fireworks.
🎆 Four viewing spots worth your time

- 4,100 yen for viewing, 7,600 yen with a meal ticket (1,000 / 4,000 yen for pass holders)
- The music comes through clearly
Upsides
- ✅ Fireworks and music in sync 🎵

💡 How busy it was: in 2025, when it was a free perk, arriving at 16:45 put me behind about five people. With the cap down to 30 in 2026, give yourself time.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best for: anyone who wants the music too, a special occasion, or an atoa pass holder
2. TOTTEI PARK / GLION ARENA ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The setup
- Sit on the lawn and take your time
- A waterfront craft beer event usually runs alongside it
- Fireworks with a beer in hand
Upsides
- ✅ You can sit down (bring a picnic sheet)
- ✅ Toilets and food are close by
- ✅ Right next to the ticketed area on Shinko Pier No.1
Downsides

3. Behind the MOSAIC Ferris wheel ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The setup
- The turning wheel paired with the fireworks
- Close enough that the light feels within reach
- A genuinely photogenic frame
Upsides
- ✅ The wheel's illumination against the fireworks is beautiful
- ✅ Relatively uncrowded
- ✅ Easy to walk over after dinner at MOSAIC
Downsides
- ❌ You can't hear the music
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best for: anyone who wants more than the standard shot
Shooting tips
- Put the wheel in the foreground and go vertical
- Use a filter so the wheel doesn't blow out
4. In front of MOSAIC, near the gas lamps ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The setup
- Brick warehouses and gas lamps in the foreground
- The port-town atmosphere Kobe is known for
- Room for shots with a foreign feel
Upsides
- ✅ Gas lamps make the composition
- ✅ Plenty of food and shopping around
- ✅ Not especially crowded
Downsides
- ❌ Hard to set up a tripod
- ❌ You can't hear the music
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best for: couples, dates, anyone who wants a photo that says Kobe
Shooting tips
- Frame a gas lamp in the foreground
- Step back and use a telephoto for compression
📊 Spot comparison
How this is scored
- Proximity: distance to the launch site and how visible the barge is
- Music: how well the audio carries
- Crowds: how hard it is to claim a place (more stars = quieter)
- Photos: how interesting and distinctive the framing is
- Comfort: seating, toilets, food
| Spot | Proximity | Music | Crowds | Photos | Comfort | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

📸 Shooting tips
📱 On a phone
Basic settings (iPhone)
- Turn Night mode OFF so it doesn't force a long exposure
- Turn Live Photos ON so you can pick the best frame afterwards
- Lower the exposure: tap the screen, then swipe the sun icon down
- AE/AF lock: press and hold to fix exposure and focus
On Android
- Use Pro (manual) mode
- ISO: 100-200
- Shutter speed: 1/15-1/30 sec
- White balance: cloudy, or around 4000K
General phone tips
- ✅ Find a tripod or something to brace against; handheld will blur
- ✅ Shoot bursts and choose later
- ✅ Go easy on the zoom, it costs you quality
- ✅ Shoot video too, you can pull stills from it
- ✅ Start with a full battery; fireworks drain it fast
Improvised phone supports
- Rest it against a railing or fence
- Wedge it against a plastic bottle
- Sit it on your bag and adjust the angle
On a mirrorless or DSLR
Camera settings
- Mode: manual (M)
- Shutter speed: bulb
- Aperture: f/8-f/13
- ISO: 100-400
What to bring
- Tripod (essential)
- Remote release or self-timer
- Spare battery
- Lens cloth
- ND filter
⚠️ Tripods are banned in the ticketed area on Shinko Pier No.1 and on the atoa rooftop. If you want one, pick a free area such as the MOSAIC waterfront.
Composition
- Add a foreground: the Ferris wheel, gas lamps, brick warehouses
- Use the reflection: the water of Kobe Port
- Try vertical: it emphasises the height of the bursts
🎯 Pick by what you're after
📷 Photography first
- Behind the MOSAIC Ferris wheel - the wheel makes the shot
- In front of MOSAIC - brick warehouses for a Kobe feel
🎵 You want the music too
- atoa 4F - the audio carries properly
- Reserved seats on Shinko Pier No.1 - seated, with the sound
🍺 Casual, with a drink
- TOTTEI PARK - grass and the waterfront
- Around MOSAIC - plenty of restaurants
💑 A date
- atoa 4F - it feels like an occasion
- In front of MOSAIC - the romantic option
👨👩👧👦 With kids
- TOTTEI PARK - room to sit on the grass
- Reserved seats on Shinko Pier No.1 - stroller parking, free for under-3s
💡 What five nights taught me
1. Close enough to see the barge
That first-night surprise: Minato HANABI is closer than you think. You can pick out the launch barge, which is exactly why the display hits so hard, and exactly why your choice of spot matters.
2. Claim your place early, but note the quiet options
- Popular spots are full by 18:30
- Arriving between 17:00 and 18:00 is about right
- Bring a picnic sheet
- atoa takes only 30 people a day, so buy ahead if you want certainty
3. The wind changes night to night
- Wind direction decides where the smoke drifts
- On a southerly, the north side is better
- Check the forecast for wind, not just rain
4. There's more either side of the fireworks
In 2026 the KOBE Machinaka Performance starts at 16:30 and Meriken Music Nights! runs from 18:50. Leaving right after the fireworks means missing everything up to 19:30, and staying on also spares you the worst of the crowds.
5. What to bring
- Picnic sheet (for the free areas)
- Warm layers; the sea breeze bites
- Power bank
- A rain poncho, since umbrellas are banned in the ticketed area
🚶 Getting there
⚠️ You cannot drive to the venue. All vehicles including taxis and tour buses are barred, and car parks inside the restricted zone cannot be entered or exited.
Meriken Park (free area)
- Minato-Motomachi Station (Kaigan Line, Exit 2): about 8 min walk
- Motomachi Station (JR / Hanshin, East Exit): about 13 min walk
- Port Loop / City Loop bus: Meriken Park stop
Shinko Pier No.1 (ticketed area)
- Sannomiya Station (JR / Hankyu / Hanshin): about 20 min walk
- Port Loop bus: Shinko-cho stop
Heading home
⚠️ Stations are packed once the fireworks end.
- Stay for the live music, which runs to 19:30
- Eat at MOSAIC first
- Walk towards Harborland before catching a train
❓ FAQ
Q. How crowded does it get?
A. Directly in front of Meriken Park, very. The MOSAIC waterfront and TOTTEI PARK are noticeably calmer.
Q. What if it rains?
A. Light rain is fine; severe weather cancels it. Cancellations are announced on the official site, and reserved seats on Shinko Pier No.1 are refunded.
Q. Can I watch for free?
A. Yes, from Meriken Park. If you'd rather sit, reserved seats on Shinko Pier No.1 are 2,200 yen; if you want a guaranteed spot with food and sound, the atoa rooftop starts at 4,100 yen.
Q. Is it OK with children?
A. TOTTEI PARK or the reserved seats work well. The reserved area is free for under-3s and has stroller parking. The atoa rooftop does not admit elementary school children or younger.
Q. Can I use a tripod?
A. Not in the ticketed area or on the atoa rooftop. In free areas, be considerate where it's busy.
Q. Are there food stalls?
A. Not in 2026. Eat at Harborland or Motomachi before you head over.
In closing
Five nights, several vantage points, and one conclusion: every spot has something the others don't.
The Ferris wheel collaboration, a craft beer on the grass, the brick warehouses, the moment the music and the fireworks lock together.
And above all, launches close enough that you can see the barge.
Where will you watch Minato HANABI 2026 from? 🎆
