Why You Should Visit

A winter evening event in Shingu, Wakayama, where illuminated Japanese paper umbrellas (wagasa) decorate the city's heritage buildings. In 2026 it runs on two nights, December 5 and 6, at the Former Nishimura Residence (Nishimura Memorial Hall) and the Former Chapman Residence, both designed by Isaku Nishimura. Organised by the Shingu Chamber of Commerce Youth Division since fiscal 2018, it has previously been held at the Shingu Castle ruins and Kumano Hayatama Taisha. The glow of the umbrellas against early 20th-century Western-style houses makes for an atmospheric night walk and good photos.
