Why You Should Visit

Fireworks go up over Katsuura Bay in Nachikatsuura in December, launched from Watarinoshima, a small island in the bay. The town's main fireworks festival is held in August; this one takes place in winter. The same evening, the Nachikatsuura Illumination—lights along the route from Kii-Katsuura Station to the bay, including the station-front Hondori shopping street, running until 31 January 2027—holds its lighting ceremony, and the fireworks follow it. A good fit if you're visiting southern Wakayama in winter and want an evening stroll through the harbour town.
