Why You Should Visit

Every November 3, the Tayama district of Minamiyamashiro, the only village in Kyoto Prefecture, dedicates a rain-prayer dance to its local shrine. Handed down since the early Edo period, it is designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kyoto Prefecture. Dancers carry a tall "shinai" on their backs, layered in four tiers of colorful cut paper and topped with gohei wands and drooping paper flowers, and dance to old songs and drums. The tradition lapsed in the 1920s and was revived in 1963; today close to 100 people take part as dancers, singers, drummers and clowns. A rare chance to see a living village festival in the tea-growing hills of southern Kyoto.
