Venue & access: Takemikumari Shrine and its otabisho (Hie-no-mae) From Kintetsu Tondabayashi Station (Nagano Line), about 18 min on the Kongo Furusato Bus Chihaya Line to Moriya, then a 10-min walk. By car, about 30 min from Mihara-Kita IC (Hanwa Expressway) via Route 309; no shrine parking.

Why You Should Visit

A harvest thanksgiving festival held every third Saturday of October at Takemikumari Shrine in Chihayaakasaka, at the foot of Mt. Kongo. The mikoshi carrying the deity travels about 1 km downhill to the otabisho called Hie-no-mae, where close to 20 danjiri floats from parishes in Chihayaakasaka, Tondabayashi and Kanan gather around it — a lineup said to be the finest in the Kawachi region. After the rite, youth groups perform Kawachi niwaka, improvised comic sketches, on the float stages. The floats are pulled through the villages from Friday evening to Sunday; Saturday is the day to see them all in one place.

Do I need a ticket or reservation to watch?

No. It is a shrine festival and you can watch freely around the otabisho.

When do the most floats gather?

Floats start entering the otabisho around 11:30 and line up around the mikoshi as they arrive. The rite and niwaka sketches begin once all have gathered, so early afternoon is the highlight.

Can I go by car?

The shrine has no parking, and roads around it are congested with the floats on the day. Taking the bus from Kintetsu Tondabayashi Station is the reliable option.
